The Runaway American Dream: Personal Essay

With this project, I worked to delve into Born to Run as a sonic and thematic journey through 1970s America. My goal was to uncover how Bruce Springsteen’s third album evolves not just in its musical structure, but in its lyrical narrative and sociopolitical commentary. By closely examining the instrumentation, track progression, and symbolic shifts—from romantic idealism to the grit of realism—I aimed to discover how the album captures a transformation in cultural consciousness and artistic ambition. This analysis showcases how a deep dive into music can reveal larger truths about identity, class, and the American experience, reflecting my own interest in using storytelling through sound to explore deeper societal themes.
